Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga made available to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009).
The key point thereof is the synchronization of breath with a progressive series of postures – a process that leads to an intensive heating of the body, resulting in detoxification of the respective muscles and organs.
Ashtanga literally means “eight levels,” each of which is interconnected with the preceding and represents the basis for learning and achieving the next.
Yama – self-control, rules for social behavior
Niyamas – Code of personal conduct, discipline
Asana – physical exercise or postures
Pranayama – conscious control over breathing
Pratyahara – relative independence of the mind from the senses
Dharana – concentration of thought
Dhyana – meditation or retention of directed thought
Samadhi – self-realization, awareness of the unity of all
These eight stages are grouped into three types:
Moral self-discipline (Yama and Niyama)
Body self-discipline (Asana, Pranayama and Pratyahara)
Mental self-discipline (Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi)
